                  DCS Chaplains   |   Become a DCS Chaplain   |   Emergency Deployments

Mr. and Mrs. John Doe

It was chaos. First I had to deal with the loss and then I had to deal with the details and then, well then I was left
with me.

Become a DCS Chaplain

At DCS, volunteers and staff are considered partners with complementary roles to play in implementing our mission. Volunteers are a valuable resource in all programs and activities of the organization and serve at all levels of decision making. They have the right to be treated as equal co-workers, the right to expect meaningful assignments, the right to effective training, the right to full involvement and participation and the right to recognition for work well done. In return, DCS expects volunteers to perform their duties with integrity and to the best of their abilities.

To achieve our goal of providing spiritual care in times of emergency, we need the active participation of people just like you -- members of the community.

Become a DCS Chaplain Volunteer chaplains are vital to broadening and expanding organizational capacity to provide skilled and appropriate nonsectarian and inter-disciplinary spiritual care for all people affected by disasters in the New York tri-state area.

Chaplains are recruited based upon their expertise, abilities and suitability to perform responsibilities, and without regard to gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, race, faith tradition or other condition.

Our volunteer intake process is as follows, the prospective volunteer:

  • Receives verification of endorsement of faith community;
  • Completes a volunteer application, including documentation of ordination or investiture, and letter from a doctor indicating physical fitness for service (i.e. able to stand for at least an eight hour shift in the out of doors);
  • Participates in a screening interview;
  • Provides appropriate references and signs a release for a background check;
  • Completes volunteer orientation training; and
  • Reviews and then signs the Disaster Chaplaincy Services Code of Conduct with the Volunteer Handbook: Chaplaincy Corps Statement of Certification.
